Here is your opportunity to own a beautiful Victorian home full of historic value in the quaint town of Hermann, Missouri! Named “Lark Hall” by the current owner, this home is ready to come alive with the help of some willful fixer uppers or rehabbers. Much of the original Victorian character and elements of the home have remained intact, including dark hardwood floors, historic trim work inside and out, multiple fireplaces with ornate mantles and decorative tile, French doors, multiple parlours, stained glass windows, high ceilings, wainscoting, and unique fixtures. The interesting and intricate layout of the home produces lots of cozy nooks, additional rooms, and multiple staircases which are all common in Victorian buildings. The third floor has been finished into a wonderful and bright space which would be perfect as an additional bedroom, office, or play room for the kids. Overall, this home has amazing potential to be restored to its original glory, but is livable right now.

The home is located in the residential district of Hermann, surrounded by a mixture of similar historic homes and contemporary homes. Sitting on the front porch, you have a wonderful view of the historic Hermann Rotunda with lots of green space directly across the street, and a partial view of the Hermann City Park right down the street. The home has amazing curb appeal with its wildflower gardens, gorgeous flowering trees, lampposts, lightning rods with decorative glass globes, distinctive trim work, a large covered front porch, and multiple entrance points.

History of the Home

This gorgeous Victorian was built around 1890 by George Starck. Starck was a German immigrant who arrived in Hermann in 1867. During this time, Hermann was developing its reputation as a robust wine producing region. Starck began working in the wine industry and worked his way up from salesman to manager to co-owner (1878) and eventually sole proprietor (1893) of what is now known as Stone Hill Winery. Under his management, the winery became the second largest in America. Stone Hill wines were world renowned, winning gold medals in eight World’s Fairs, including Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876. By the 1870’s, the winery was shipping 1,250,000 gallons of wine per year. Starck’s success granted him substantial wealth and a favorable position throughout the region and was known as “one of Hermann’s substantial citizens”. He and his wife built the most expensive home in Gasconade County in 1885, known as “Starck’s Wine Castle”. The home was built in the Second Empire style and has been described in historical texts as “built to impress” and “a model of convenience”. Years later, Starck built a house a mere 150 feet away from his mansion as a wedding gift for his eldest daughter, Laura, and her husband William Wiseman. This home is now 1100 Washington Street and could be your new home!

Historic Hermann, Missouri

Originally founded by German settlers in the mid 1800’s, Hermann is known for its rich German heritage characterized by annual month-long Maifest and Oktoberfest celebrations, the downtown historic district where mostly original brick buildings hug the sidewalks in traditional German style, and a great number of wineries which has earned Hermann the title of “Missouri Wine Country.” One New York Times article described Hermann saying “The village, particularly its 10-block historic section, is neither a restoration nor a museum-piece setting; it is a living, working community passed down from the early 19th century with its architecture and style largely intact.”

Designated as "Missouri's Most Beautiful Town", Hermann is an idyllic, almost magical small town along the Missouri River. The unparalleled scenic beauty of the area is characterized by steep hills, cliffs, and low valleys, providing breathtaking views from any point. Drive, walk, or take the trolley through the town and you will immediately feel the Old World charm of the historic buildings and the small town friendliness of the residents and local business owners. While nestled in its own private nook, Hermann is in an ideal location because of its centrality in the state. The town is only an hour from Saint Louis and Columbia, 45 minutes from Jefferson City, and 2.5 hours from Kansas City. This boosts the thriving tourism industry as well as provides residents with the country lifestyle while having easy access to the amenities of the city. People from all over the state, country, and even world come to visit and move to Hermann to experience its natural beauty, small town friendliness, and of course- the wine!
